Applying Established Water-Based Binders to Aqueous Processing of LiNi<sub>0.83</sub>Co<sub>0.12</sub>Mn<sub>0.05</sub>O<sub>2</sub> Positive Electrodes

The combination of two different binders: styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and polyacrylic acid (PAA), in with carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) has been investigated for aqueous electrode preparation LiNi0.83Co0.12Mn0.05O2 positive electrodes. use Ni-rich active materials Li-ion batteries is becoming industry standard, however, such cathode are sensitive to water, which makes the manufacturing especially challenging based on industry-information even impossible. electrodes areal capacities 2.7 mAh cm?2 densities up 3.5 g cm?3 was optimized. electrochemical evaluation bi-layer pouch cells showed that performance depends heavily individual binders. Using PAA binders, best reached 80% capacity retention only after 470 cycles. In contrast, SBR binder performed very similar PVdF reference view rate capability a specific 1 C 177 gCAM?1 compared 179 electrode. addition, this SBR-based excellent cycling stability at C/1 84% 1,000 cycles; therefore, matching typical requirements electric vehicle batteries.
